The guest speaker at the September meeting was Mark Mitchels, who returned to Diss U3A to give a talk on ‘The Lost City of Dunwich’.

Diss U3A August Meeting

The guest speaker at the August meeting was Brian Heard, who gave a talk on life with the police in Hong Kong. This talk followed a previous talk on ‘Forensics in Scotland Yard’.

Diss U3A July meeting

The guest speaker at the July meeting was Doreen Reed, who gave an entertaining performance of her humorous stories and poems.  Doreen lived in Warwickshire as a child but soon discovered the joys of Norfolk whilst out on weekend cycling trips.  She has given many talks to the WI and other organisations and published her own books and CDs of her poems.

The next meeting of Diss U3A will be on Thursday 7th August, commencing at 10.30, at Diss United Reform Church.

The guest speaker at the August meeting will be Brian Heard  who will follow up last year’s talk on forensics at Scotland Yard with a talk on  “Forensic Science in Hong Kong”.

Diss U3A June Meeting

The guest speaker at the June meeting was Pip Wright, retired primary school teacher, who has published several books and given many talks on local history from subjects ranging from ‘the Dissolution of the Monasteries’ to ‘Exploring Suffolk by Bus Pass’.U3A#1

Diss U3A May Meeting

The guest speaker at the May meeting was Alan Wilkinson, Managing Director of the successful East Anglian based WPP Architects, who gave a fascinating illustrated tour of contemporary architecture in Suffolk. As well as being a general practitioner, Alan has been a part time tutor at Oxford Brookes and a part time lecturer at Suffolk College.

Diss U3A April Meeting

The guest speaker at the April meeting was Peter Maggs, former rock musician turned physicist, who gave an enlightening and well illustrated talk on ‘The Untold Story” of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Report of Diss U3A AGM and March meeting

The March meeting was preceded by the AGM at which the chair, Janet Bloomfield, reported that in 2013 the branch continues to flourish and has seen membership numbers increase to a record level of 284, many of whom attend one or more of the 34 interest groups currently available.

Following the AGM Jean Croft gave a short talk on “The Pulham Market Millenium Tapestry” which members have the opportunity to visit on the 26th March in Pulham Market Village Hall. To conclude the meeting our own Mike Bowen gave a lively musical presentation entitled “Did You Jive In Fifty Five” telling the story of British Rock and Roll from the early 1950’s to the arrival of the Beatles in 1963.

Report of Diss U3A September Meeting

September’s guest speaker was Bernard Lockett who gave an interesting talk on the lives and works of Gilbert and Sullivan. W.S. Gilbert the wordsmith came from a wealthy background and originally trained as a lawyer, while Arthur Sullivan came from a poorer background and was an accomplished composer of church music but always wanted to compose music for the theatre.

Jennifer Kelsey’s talk  “Mary Wollstencraft  Was Not Alone”  highlighted the lives of 18th Century English women during the period 1700-1830 and the challenges faced by strong minded women like Mary Wollstencraft who were determined to change attitudes towards  womens’ lives and education.

Report of the July U3A Meeting

July’s meeting had a slightly darker edge to it as retired forensic scientist Brian J. Heard gave a talk entitled “In search of the smoking gun” which told of his time at Scotland Yard in the mid 60’s, well before the advances and reliance of DNA and scientific progress.
