Report of Diss U3A AGM and March meeting

The March meeting was preceded by the AGM at which the chair, Janet Bloomfield, reported that in 2013 the branch continues to flourish and has seen membership numbers increase to a record level of 284, many of whom attend one or more of the 34 interest groups currently available.

Following the AGM Jean Croft gave a short talk on “The Pulham Market Millenium Tapestry” which members have the opportunity to visit on the 26th March in Pulham Market Village Hall. To conclude the meeting our own Mike Bowen gave a lively musical presentation entitled “Did You Jive In Fifty Five” telling the story of British Rock and Roll from the early 1950’s to the arrival of the Beatles in 1963.

The March meeting was preceded by the AGM at which the chair, Janet Bloomfield, reported that in 2013 the branch continues to flourish and has seen membership numbers increase to a record level of 284, many of whom attend one or more of the 34 interest groups currently available. In the past communication with a membership in excess of 280 could be difficult but thanks to the internet members can be updated easily by viewing our website which is used regularly by members and non-members alike. At this AGM several members of the executive committee were required to stand down following the completion of their term of office. The retiring members were Maureen Gaynor (Publicity Secretary), Bernie Morris (Business Secretary) and Don Rogers (Membership Secretary) who all received thanks and tokens of appreciation. The following nominees, Georgina Livingstone, Linda Chaplin and Peter Sorrell were all elected to serve in their respective posts. The 2014 committee will be joined by two newly elected members, Mary Cotton who will serve as vice chair, and Peter Woolley who becomes social events co-ordinator. The chair also took the opportunity to thank Mike Bowen, former programme secretary and Newsletter editor Richard Ware both of whom have decided recently to resign. Richard Ware has produced and edited the newsletter for several years and therefore until a replacement editor can be found the quarterly newsletter will not be available to members. Special thanks were also made to four more “front of house” retirees Olive Taylor, Winsome Rogers, Rosemary Willow and Valerie Clarke, all of whom have given great service to Diss U3A. Finally thanks and tokens of appreciation were given to the dedicated team who work so hard in the kitchen before each monthly meeting and without whose efforts U3A meetings would be a much drier affair.
